24 June 2014 ~ Tuesday / intro to Religion ~

Marx’s “historical materialism” Weber emphasized the importantce of cultural influences embedded in religion as a means for understanding the geneis sof capitalism.
According to Weber, Marx was incorrect about the motivations people have for talking advantage (or not) of the material conditions of their lives.
2 opping views emerge from Marx & Weber ~
Marx ~ religion produced a calming/numbing effect upon the people which caused them to accept the material conditions of their lives and their tolerance of it as a sign of their suffering in the material world
Weber ~ suggests, that within the Protestant mindset, a combination of denying themselves enjoyment of their earnings and wealth and continually working hard demonstrated their election by God
Unmensch) , where he seeks and must seek his true reality j…
Thend only the reflection of himself in the fantstic reality of heaven, where he sought a superman, will no longer feel disposed to find the mere appearance of himself, tghe non-man (
The foundation of irreligious criticism is :  Man makes religion, religion does not make man, Religion is indeed,
hinduism ~ Vedic traditions
m_aya ~ illusion/ adman / Brahman (PRIEST) / dharma ~ duty /

caste = varna  OR ( JATI )

Devi’ ~ baby boy / Deva ~ baby girl / Human varna = Brahmans = priests / Ksa’triyas - warriors / Vaisnavas ~ merchants / Sudras - servants (majority) / & then we have the UNTOUCHABLES!

Karl Marx,  (Emile Durkheim)

German sociologist, philosopher, and political economist
his ideas influenced social theory, social reserach and the entire discipline of sociology
Weber is often cited, with Durkheim and Karl Marx as among the 3 founding creators of sociology
argued for studying of actions in the social realm via interpretation (rather than purely empiricist) means
also argued that his study should be based on understanding the purpose & meaning that individuals attach to their own actions
Weber's main intellectual concern was understanding the processes of rationalization, secularization, and
"disenchantment"
Weber viewed these things as associated with the rise of capitalism and modernity
he saw all this as resulting from new modes of thinking about the world beginning during the Enlightment
The Protestant Ethic
Weber is best known for his thesis combining evonomic sociology and the sociology of religion
This is the basis for this book The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, in which he proposed that ascetic Protestantism was one of the major "elective affinities" associated with the rise in Europe and the U.S. of market-driven capitalism and the rational legal nation-state.
The Protestant Ethic formed the earliest part in Weber's broader investigation into world religion he would go on to examine the religion of China, India and ancient Judaism, with particular regard to the apparent non-development of capitalism in the corresponding societies, as well as to their differing forms of social stratification.

Monday, 23 June 2014~

Really feel a lot better today, after having had a moment where I was able to share a bit about my dilemma with the wifi.  So lame, but it is totally true.  I have been letting Kim Valadez, Marjolein, Gilda, and some other women at church know.  So, I know for a fact that some of them are saying a prayer for me.  Thank goodness!!

     Monday ~ 23 June 2014 / Intro to Religion class /
ambivalence ~ Freud both loving & hating religion, while in Europe the 'ENLIGHTMENT" was happening.  All of the liberal arts were being discovered, such as philosophy, math, the reformation.
You don't need to rely just on religion anymore.  People know that it is the best for them.  Freud is telling a "just so" story ~   we need EVIDENCE, REPEATABILITY, FALSIFIABILITY,
"the study of religion" ~ Freud created a theory of Freud (there you have it)
we start out with this guilt, and society teaches us how to focus it ~ according to Freud
WISH fulfillment ~ comforts people!!
God is one cool Dad who gives us all the stuff we want & ask for, the wish fulfiller my Father!
eternal peace, EXPIATION OF GUILT !

IS A LEARNING PROCESS, THOUGH ~ WE SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES OF OUR "SINS"

sorcery among the Songhay ~

FOLKLORE ~ cohersive, promising, fire & brimstone / demand. Fortune tellers, can make things happen (in a very objective way.)  These people actually get paid for their services.  Dancing.  Sacrifice ~ is another form of coercion like in Ramadan.

How to deal with the river, uncontrollable.  Refering to women in a way, how to control women in general.
RELIGION ~

2nd official day ~ 18th June 2014

Really, an exciting class ~ but I do feel a bit apprehensive at the end of our very first official week.  I am not sure if I should hang in there, such an intense topic.  So little time, will do my best to keep up.  Even though with no signal at the house, is near impossible to do the homework.

Will talk to my professor Sarah about what is going back at the house.  Besides, having had the excellent tour for a new place in Petaluma.  On Friday afternoon, I went by to meet my prospective roommate Paul.  Did not work out, I'm sure he is okey.  But, a bit too intense, his personality is just a bit too much for me right now.

Would've preferred for him to be more like, indifferent to me.  You know just co-exist, but keep your distance, buddy.  But, he gave me the impression of being offended by my attitude.  Oh well, will keep looking for a place.  Keep your fingers crossed for me, dear God.  And for sure, I need to let my teacher know about my worries with not being able to access my work.

But, I absolutely love the class.  So much history, amazing!

Truly, I am still having second thoughts about me staying in this amazing class.  High probability of having singed on for something that is WAY over my head.  All of the students there seem to have a grasp on their "religious" history.  Still considering dropping, will talk to Ms. Sarah about it.  Maybe, drop with either getting a W or before that time frame. : (

2nd day ~ impressive!

Very excited about being in this class.  All of the information coming from my teacher, just blows me away she is so knowledgeable!
Really looking forward to hearing more & more about other religions and their unique practices.  So amazing just to hear some of the facts and information being shared in class.  Not at all, what I was expecting BUT definitely very informative & interesting! (to say the least.
Hope that I might be able to join in the groups on Fridays ~ for the games!

Will try my best to try and keep up with all the data being put out there by my AMAZING teacher!
